Check that the clutch switch is connected and properly located, it doesn't just stop the starter from turning but also interacts with the ECU to affect a cold start. If it isn't working correctly, the engine will constantly run rich.

Its a pity that dealers can't be more truthful, especially when someone is taking the time and effort to travel a fair distance just to be disappointed.
