Touring bags

Post by Dapper dan »

Howdy!

Thinking if heading from mighty Devon UK to le mans classic 24hr....July 2018....then down to mt Ventoux for a cup of tea at the top! (Cycled up it a few years ago as part of a race across Europe and didn't get time to enjoy it)
Going for about a week...any idea on a not too pricey set of saddle bags and tank bag?..
Thinking of saddle bags, a tent strapped over the top of them, ruck sack and tank bag......or do you think that's overkill?

Any advice would be appreciated!

I suppose the Ventura rack system is worth considering:

Cortech do some nice tail and saddle bags, can get them from Amazon etc:

Have to watch the exhausts they get in the way of saddle bags :(

Hi,

Tank bags are difficult to come by as most are magnetic, but the Xtra needs one with straps.

I made a support frame that stops the panniers from resting on the exhausts.

Fek..didn't consider exhausts....I'm running mtc cans which are a but higher than stock......
Saddle bags could be a real problem....tail rack /tank bag and ruck sack might be the answer.....
Out with the tape measure....don't fancy flaming spare pantz! :lightfart:

That was 2 weeks, 2 up, Derbyshire up to Shetlands then back down for a lap of Scotland.it

I'll see if I can get you some pictures of the frame to support the panniers.

I'm not sure if it fastened to the rails for the rack, if not it could be available for you, if you are interested.

It mounted to the inside of the exhaust hanger and to this lug on the rack.

Hi, it does not have to be massively rigid, but you have to remember to keep the loading balanced from side to side.

I have M2R saddlebags that have tapered bottoms for bikes with upswept exhaust systems. I move them far enough forward so they don't sit on the exhausts. I also keep a very close eye on them to make sure they don't sag onto the exhausts. You might find it's best to remove the underseat covers either side as the pressure on them can break them.

I've found a more practical and comfortable way to tour on a bike 2-up, by getting a Honda Deauville

Thanks for the reply aussie. :D

I'll have a look for the up swept bags..it might be an easier purchase.

I've also seen on ebay a bag tank (bearing in mind our plastic tanks) which seems to have a locking disk for the petrol cap and you slide the bag in and lock it down.
Anyone had one of these?

You also have the option of strap on tank bags, the base stays attached to the bike and the bag is attached with zips or clips to the base. http://www.oxfordproducts.com/motorcycl ... _on_black/
