A short while ago DirtyDog posted non-starting 1000 which ended up focusing on the General Relay, as it's called in the Workshop Manual, also called the Main Relay on the circuit diagram in the Owner's Manual/Handbook. It is item 44 in the circuit diagram in the handbook:

In that post I commented that I was having similar problems and thought at first that it was corroded contacts, but it turned out to be the General/Main relay". I'm putting up this post in order to be specific about that relay.
Having checked out the actual relay, it seems to be a 12 Volt relay with two contacts being normally open (i.e., open when no 12Volts is present). Each contact is rated at 20 Amps. Here is some info:

The blue and black are the 12 volt connections to the relay coil. The thick Red/Yellow is connected to the two Red wires when activated, after that, everything becomes a bit indecipherable…
Having looked inside the old relay, the contact "arm" seems to have a lot of slop in it, enabling the contact to shift around somewhat. Prior to replacement, the starting on my own bike had become intermittent but it had not totally failed. Maybe I could have bodged it somehow and kept it going but, having replaced it, it's been fine now for many start operations and several hundred miles.

Thanks for the info, I was having the occasional starting problems on mine that I thought may have been a loose contact in the starter button housing but it may be an aged relay problem so this is all good info for the future.
Road racing's where it's at - going round in circles all day is for hamsters.
