Different gearing

Post by norrie »

Was thinking of putting a new chain and sprockets on and thought about changing the gearing as I find I don't use 6th gear much and would like more acceleration.
How many teeth are the standard sprockets and what would you recommend?
I was thinking if dropping one tooth on the front and going up three on the rear. What do you think?

:o somewhere I have a spreadsheet calculator that I created for the gearing on the trike - it does you graphs and everything... I will have a look tonight on my old laptop to see if I still have it - basically you put in the sprocket sizes, wheel diameters and the gear ratios in the box and it will tell you what speed you are going to be doing in each gear at what revs... :revrev:

Have a look on here

I used it when setting up the FJ, the results I got from the site were reasonably accurate.

if increased chain wear bothers you then change rear up rather than front down

I had higher gearing on my other sv. One up ont rear made for good mile munching. I bought it for a trip abroad as it came already done.

Only prob I had was twas a bit lazy off lights and junctions. Dunno what sprocket size Rap650 uses, so no idea of the relevance apart from experience of lazier gearing and the chain never seemed like it was going to ever wear out!
