Rear wheel spindle beware.

Post by mally »

Got a bit of a story for you all.
I have just started a new job and have a few chaps working for me. on sunday i took my v rap for a drive and thought id pop in to catch the boys sleeping/watching porn etc etc.

Any way pulled into work one of the chaps came over and started to oggle at the beast and i oggled with him.

I then noticed one of the back plates on the chain adjuster was adrift i looked some more and noticed the rear spindle nut was missing and the spindle was hanging out about an inch.

I kinda gasped a bit and then realised that the little shimmy i had just had that i thought was a white line was actually the rear wheel shifting about.

So beware. please check yours .

Questions then

Does anyone know the thread size? so i can get a nut
Does anyone Know the Torgue setting ? so i can tighten it
Has any one got any manuals on CD? so i can check other important nuts

chears all mally

According to the owners manual the torque on the rear spindle nut should be:
10Kgm
100Nm
73.76 ft-lb :)

one of the instructors who got my wife through her test had a raptor.his chain adjuster snapped, wheel against swingarm, crash.he escaped with few bruises but bike totalled.this was caused by the swingarm end caps that hold the adjuster bolts cracking,so i regularily check mine now.one cause in geneneral can be replacing adjusters/axel nut with stainless.stainless is not good enough, looks good but very brital.high torqueing can cause threads to strip too.I have an aprilla titanium axel nut.looks great and can be polished.also have titanium adjusters.still beware, there are issues with titanuim too, make sure you buy the top grade from a reputable dealer. www.tastynuts.com is one i have used to replace every nut and bolt on my v rap.

Lost an engine mounting bolt on mine. How can you lose a bolt about 8" long without noticing it?
The moral is to check all nuts and bolts regularly!

Gear Change Lever

Post by twistedpr »

Stumbled across this post whilst looking for summit else. A couple of weeks ago I was heading back down the motorway (at speed  ) when my mate pulled up beside me and started pointing down. I thought he was indicating he needed fuel as we had just passed a 2miles-to-services sign and I was running low too.

So, we both started slowing down and pulling into the inside line when I noticed he had pulled onto the hard shoulder. I thought he must be in trouble, so pulled over myself. It was only when I went to drop it down a cog or two and that I discovered what he was pointing at - my gear lever was hanging off! The bloody pivot bolt had vibrated loose and was lying somewhere back up the M40!

Managed to stop it, hold in the clutch whilst my mate used his hand to change into 2nd for me, before we (relatively) crawled up the hard shoulder all the way to the services. 1hr, a replacement bolt and 2 huge washers later and I was back on the road.

It's my own fault as I took the lever off a few monts before and didn't threadlock it back on  Now Loctite 243 is my new best friend....
