Rubber air intakes

Hi all has anyone removed the rubber air intakes from the sides of the engine? If yes what was the out come? Have you covered with a gauze or something else??

Not done it myself buy I think its refered to here as a snorkeloctomy.. or something simmilar... if you do a search for snorkel I think you will get a lot of hints and tips .. HTH

i have
i read somewhere to remove the snorks
so i did you just pull them off to gain better air flow
a healthy high flow air filter
and then to the Butchery Department '' time to attack the standard fit exhausts
Crude'ly an iron bar i used half inch bar about 24'' long
insert into tail pipe until a firm resistance is felt
them hit with a big hammer ''i used a lump hammer and took 4/5 blows'' to break an internal baffle free from half of its fixings i cut it open after wards to see and saw they are very well built ''industrial almost thats why their so dammed heavy'' still firmly fixed by half its fixings and a welded tube to another baffle plate also firmly fixed i don't see what i have done to ever be a problem
by the way i carried out this barbarrick atrossity whilst the cans were still fastened to the bike

the benefit is gases escape better improving perfomance, its now making the front wheel go light so still some more adlustments needed lol
and a better sound a bit on the meaty side
and its a very cheap mod and it worked for me

Did you just leave the opening's open?? Or did you fit some sort of cover/gauze to stop anything ie leaves getting in?? If thats possible?
Will take mine off in the morning and see whats what.

hi yes i just removed them and they are left open

i fear the large opening left open may encourage squirels to roost there lol so some mesh to be fitted in the future

I got some mesh (the only stuff i could easily get was mesh for fibre glass repair) and formed it round the opening and held on with cable ties around the edge. I dont think you neccisarily need it but stops the bigger bits getting through to the filter.

Mine haven't been on for about 8-9 years, (that long ago now I can't remember if it made a difference ), but I left the openings un-covered and haven't noticed any problems due to that.

I just avoid the area when hosing her down that's all.
