dead battery

Post by glennsdaf »

I went to ride my 1000 raptor Saturday and discovered that the battery was completely dead, I jump start the bike and it fired up as normal but when I removed the jump leads the engine died, I put the battery on a fast charge and the bike would only run for a few minutes before it died again. I put a volt meter between the terminals when the engine was running and it was reading 12-13 volts when the engine died it was only reading 6 volts, doesany body know if would be the battery or something else as I said the engine runs fine with the jump leads on. Hi Glenn,

its almost certainly the battery is naffed.

it should read 14-15V when engine running and at least 12V without.

Change it and hope there are no other problems.

Is the battery newish?
Has it been difficult to start of late?

You could have a charging problem with the bike that caused this but without a decent battery to check it with........

Try charging the battery slowly for 24 hours and see what voltage you get. Then leave it for another 24 hours and see how much it has dropped.

Thanks for your help Martin
The bike has started fine every time before. The battery was on the bike when I bought so I do not know how old it is.

Try slowly charging then leaving the battery first. Monitoe V and decide if good or not.

if the battery seems dead then buy/beg/borrow one to proove the rest of the charging system.

A new battery may be all you need
