clattery engine

Post by FEDERICO »

Hi all not been in touch for a while, all was going well, now my 1000 raptor,
has developed a rather metalic clattery sound coming from rear cylinder
area, ive checked the tappets and there within tolerance, but the noise
is heavier than that and sounds more like a broken bearing or something
flaping about, anybody no of any problems with the rear timing chain
tensioner or could it be something stupid like the exhaust gas by pass valve
or whatever its called, the noise seems worse when pulling away in lower gears
any ideas or should i use thicker ear plugs.
thanks.ps the bikes done 36000 mls and still runs very well, and uses no oil. :?

Hi,

could be number of things but one to have a look for as I had a similar noise on mine a while back...had my arse twitching for a while, thought there was some bad shit happening.......there is a metal spacer ring in the joint on the rear exhaust downpipe near the shock. When exhaust cold, as obviously, you don't want to be messing around when it's hot, check to see if the joint is loose or if there is any movement of the spacer ring, if there is, the spacer rattles around and makes a hell of a noise. Mine just needed the clamp tightening up a little and all was well again -

from personal experience if the noise is there on pulling away but not at rest it could be your front sprocket on the way out.

When I test rode mine prior to purchase I had a metallic dinging noise on the overrun.

I checked & it was a loose, badly adjusted final drive chain clanging on the exhaust.

Hello federico here sorry to all of you that have replied to my clattery
engine problem so far the cock up on replying to you is all mine will try
to use the site more often, computings not my best subject, anyway
still not pinpointed the noise, but it does appear to be coming from
under the tank from the top of the engine, sounds very like its coming
from that exhaust air bypass thingy, has anybody had problems with that.
thanks again federico

Hi there.
I've got a Raptor 1000 and have the same rattling sound (I think).
The mechanic thought it was the valves, so he checked them, but they were ok.

Another thing I've got is since the last checkup that there is a benzin smell around my bike. There might be something leaking. Anyone got an idea?

Some info. I live in Belgium and bought the red raptor from 2001 some months ago. There are 27000kms on counter. It rides like nothing else so I want it to be in good condition.

Hello all federico here Ive had most of the engine in bits, and could'nt find
anything obvious,tappets,valve springs,chain tensioners,water pump etc
so put it all back together and looked for something else that may have been
vibrating and sounding like an engine noise, and found the bracket that holds
the rear exhaust pipe to the frame had cracked on the weld so am having
it welded this weekend and will report back if that fixes the problem.

A reply for GERTEN when I first got my raptor it had a fuel leak
from the seal where the fuel pump fits on the bottom of the
fuel tank and I had to replace the seal,if it is that, its the same
as some of the Suzuki tls models but check your part numbers as
there are different types.
