tickover stumble cure

Post by pod »

My 2001 carbed 650 began to stumble and stall at tick over, prior to this the tickover speed had been adjusted up a couple of times. To cap it all one wet run had the bike running on one cylinder.

Removing the front plug showed moisture ingress, replacing the plug with a used old one restored two pot running but the tickover was still poor.

2 new plugs ordered and a carburettor balance performed, and back in business with a smooth steady tickover, one pot was well out of whack.

Tips for carb balancing.

Check balance around 2,500 rpms by screwing up the tickover adjuster.
The front pot vac stub is not easy access , a long pair of locking forceps made the job a lot easier, also a very long screwdriver makes accessing the air box clamp screws a lot easier.
Reset to just below 1,500 rpms tickover when completed.

its only about the 4th time I have balanced the carbs in 47,000 miles so it was probably overdue.

HTH someone.
