Bling for my Xtra - help me choose?

Post by Spyke »

So my annual bonus is coming this month, and I've decided to "invest it wisely" on my fave toy (that's why I've got dogs, not kids! )

I've decided wavy discs (front at least), new front brake lines (on my mechanic's advice), and a hugger are The Go - she's stock at the moment, pretty much.

Seems like the 298mm front discs are only also used on Aprilia RS250s, and the 220 rear isn't used on anything else, I can't, for the life of me, find a wavy rear (although I thought I saw a set of 3 on fleabay a while back). So do I invest wisely in the Braking wavies http://www.braking.com/catalogue/dettag ... olo=WK039L and http://www.braking.com/catalogue/dettag ... olo=WK039R, or the eBay pair for an Aprilia at http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Brake-Discs- ... 4cf15fbaec, or go for the cheap-arse Arashi ones http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Motorcycle-F ... 410wt_1186? Has anyone scored a wavy rear anywhere? Has anyone had any problems fitting Chinese 300mm discs?

My mechanic doesn't like the splitter in my front brake lines, so I'm gonna get HEL to make some up - and support my local(ish) Aussie performance brake line supplier, has anyone gone for a double line front kit, and if so would you mind sharing your experience/measurements?

And finally the hugger...tricky choice, been working on it ever so slowly for years now...would consider a plain matt black plastic one but I can only see "shiny" GRP or carbon so I'm thinking carbon would be preferable, seen some bad reports about the eMoto one at http://www.emotouk.com/cagiva/carbon.htm, a good report on ScarlattiMoto at http://www.scarlattimoto.co.uk/scarlatt ... cts_id=264 (although it shows a pic of a belly pan instead!), and can't see anything on the TrendItaly one at http://www.trenditaly.it/rear-hugger-ca ... -7048.html, the SkidMarx one doesn't seem to incorporate a chain guard at http://www.skidmarx.co.uk/product.php?id_product=40771 and I'd much prefer an integral chain guard if at all possible. Think I might have seen a Geelong Carbon Craft (local Aussie purveyor of CF) in the past, although I haven't seen their work in the flesh, as it were, but I think there are a few Aussies on here so I'm keen to hear experiences.

All opinions welcomed! Would YOU be happy just upgrading the front brakes and not the back? I'm not sure, on this one, the full set would be preferable!

P.S. Has anyone put frame plugs into an Xtra? Would like to do something to tidy them up, reckon the holes are about 30mm, but seeing as the cuts are not perpendicular to the tube bore I'm not sure standard frame plugs would fit.

Hel already do brake lines for Raptors. My ex got a set for his VRap years ago. No idea of measurements, twas a long time ago. Double lines.
EBC defo do a rear disk, as mine had a crack in it when the, dealer mot'd it for me. I personally woyldnt use Chinese cheap discs, nor braking ones. I know a lot of SV peeps that have had very poor experiences with them.

Hugger, mines from an SV1000, as is my belly pan. The hugger incorporates a chain guard, needs a wee bit of faffing to make it fit but is sufficient and safe, the pan fits perfect.

Hope this is of use

Thanks @dizzyblonde, that is helpful. Saw the HEL Raptor 00-01 kit at http://helperformance.com.au/store/prod ... ts_id=7947, wasn't sure it would be the right size for an 04 Xtra, but guess it would be "close enough"!

Saw the EBC discs, but they only seem to come in "round", when it's really wavy that I've set my heart on now. I did do a bit of research on the Arashi discs and couldn't find any complaints about them, but I suppose it's better to be safe than sorry, brake discs are an important component! Didn't know there were issues with the discs by Braking, can you point me at some of them? I did try and Google, but I can't seem to specify the difference between "Braking" and "braking", bit of a drag (pardon the pun).

One thing out of my experience with my 650...don't replace the front discs with larger ones, keep the same diameter. I 've got aprilia mille discs - 320mm - and braking from low speed can be a disturbing experience especially when i'm not 100% focused.
It's all greek to me....

Give hel a quick email before you do your purchase and tell them what year, and which bike and they will see you right. We had an issue with copper washers, banjos or something, and they had supplied the wrong year pack...prob more our mistake for not ordering properly. They sent the correct bits next day after a quick call, and bobs your uncle perfect. Pays to get it right first time in your case, I think :)

As for Braking.....info comes from SV site, that's like searching for a needle in a hay stack! Could be anywhere on there :?
