New to Raptors

Post by bobbob455 »

Hi everyone, got my first V Raptor a couple of weeks ago, a 2001 in red with 9900 miles.
Loving the bike, but it occasionally dies on me when I try to set off from traffic lights, it starts again immediately, but doesn't seem to like the initial twist of throttle when it's been at idle for a minute or two. I've increased the tick over a little to about 1400, is there a known problem with this? Otherwise I am loving my new bike.

Hey Bob,

check your TPS reset, are your plugs/ leads OK? Is it running a bit rough around 3k revs?

Do a search on the forum, lots of info on problems of this type.

What's a TPS reset?
It runs great throughout the whole rev range, it just doesn't like the initial twist of the throttle after it's been idling for a minute or two.

TPS is throttle position sensor and there is a guide on here on how to check it using the digital dash or a multimeter if you have one.

Are the throttle bodies well balanced too?

I would check TPS first as its easy to do and the most likely culprit.

Also check all the vacuum hoses around the throttle bodies/airbox and PAIR gubbins as it could affect this.

The search function is your friend on here, loads of info and you can still probably download a workshop manual for free!!

Thanks again, I'll have a go when I do the oil change & plugs next week.
I'm getting 40mpg, is that about normal?

40 mpg seems a bit heavy, unless of course you're bouncing the needle off the redline in all the gears! I get about 45 mpg without trying too hard. Can get close to 55 mpg if I'm trying very hard indeed. Only drop down to about 40 mpg if I'm revving through the lower gears a lot which I do occasionally on some of the twisty little lanes around here.

I agree with Red Mist, his figures are more the norm unless you are using all the revs?

I don't ride especially hard, but I have been using it everyday to commute into & out of Leeds, so a fair bit of stop-start.
I'll be giving her a service next week & try doing the TPS, I will let you know how it goes.
What am I looking for on the LCD display when doing the TPS?, it doesn't seem that clear to me.

Are the iridium spark plugs worth the extra cash?

they last much longer so depends if you are planning to keep the bike for a long time/lots of miles??

Any other benefits are negligible TBH

For reassurance, you may find the video of the TPS setting for a TL1000 instructive:

I also seem to have bookmarked these under TPS, FWIW:

PS: This query seems to be in two categories. :?

PPS: I saw some comment here(?) about the plugs. The manual (p B6) shows a dual electrode/earth as the standard. I think the iridium is single – well, at least check since the dual electrode may give a better flame front, so to speak.
