No main beam or dip, no electric start

Post by pod »

Pulled the bike ( 2001 650) out of the shed, fitted new battery. Main beam and dip have gone, main works on Passing button, but not dip switch, any clues?
Also woulnt start on button after a short run to get fuel, scratched head, looked at clutch switch no joy, left out in the rain with seat off ( by mistake), parked overnight, started on button next morning!, lights still missing tho.
Bike in the huff after sharing time with the BSA I think.
Stay calm.

For stuff like this I always laughing say 'oh, it's just a bad earth' but it is often the case when left over winter. Clean & vaseline all possible earth and battery connections. Cheap multimeters are a god send in these cases.

Lights still missing when the engine runs?

Just a thought but does passing use high beam and lights/parking low so faulty bulb :?

Hi, could be all sorts, I'd check what voltage you have to the common on the dip/main switch, as it could be either the dip/main switch or the lights on/off switch (do you have either a side light or tail light, as this would point more to the dip/main switch).

Got it, followed the cable from RHS switch block to under tank LHS junction block, split same, re vaselined re united, lights back on, woo hoo. Pilot light did work , but not main and dip. AOK now. MOT next Wed, had to cancel one already.

Bonus feature, the stumble at idle has gone, that connector block is worth watching out for, lives just beside the breather plenum, (black plasticlump on side of airbox.. Bike running well, stripped and cleaned the rear caliper , everything was working OK, no seized pistons, putting this down to the magic red rubber grease it was lubed with the last time.
Stay calm.
