I realise now that pulling in the clutch actually caused the wheel to lock - it was only the engine keeping the wheel turning! Sort of counter intuitive in the heat of the moment.
And yes, I tend not to use the rear brake much. 90% of the stopping power is from the front anyway.

Rear Brake Lock-up - very scary!
After a 1200km ride through Australia's SW, I was returning home along a relatively busy freeway at about 100km on my beloved Xtra Raptor. All of a sudden I lost power - it felt just like an engine seizure. I pulled in the clutch, but this did not stop the back wheel from locking up solid! I pulled ...

Re: TL1000 fuel pump
An update - the fuel pump fitted to my Xtra Raptor is the same as that fitted to a TL1000R, NOT the TL1000S. The photos show what this is like. I only found this out when I ordered a new fuel pump gasket, since using the old one proved unsuccessful. I initially ordered one for the TL1000S (since the...

TL1000 fuel pump
You can fit a fuel pump from a TL to a Raptor. However, the fuel sensors on the TL are much lower, so you will only have about 5km after the low fuel warning light starts flashing before you coast to a halt!! The answer is to raise the thermistors by cutting and extending the wires (solder). I used ...

Re: MIVV Silencers ??
I have two Xtra Raptors (See old post "Bat Bike"). One has MIVVs (which I bought from Italy and fitted on a my new Raptor) and one has Remus (which came with Raptor 2 bought second hand). Both options make a nice sound and are far lighter than the stock pipes. I tried the MIVVs without the...

Re: The Bat Bike
Yeah, I like Ducatis too! I have a 1997 916SPS. Bloody uncomfortable bike and has rubber bands to drive the cams that need regular changing whether the bikes used or not, but looks cool. I bought it to put on the wall on the lounge of our new house, but the wife, (bat woman) objected. She suggested ...

Re: The Bat Bike
Various theories exist as to why the bike wasn't popular. My theory is that it was too expensive new and an unknown quantity compared to the SV1000. The looks were also probably more radical for most and the spares a problem. Like most of you, I probably came upon the Raptor by accident when a mate ...

Re: The Bat Bike
Ok, heres a better shot of the eagle. Actually I like the idea of a Predator, a Bat bike and a standard one. So I just need to buy one more. Any suggestions for the other 996 Xtra raptors that I hope to buy? I understand that BIKE magazine ran an article recently on the best ever 20 naked bikes. I a...

Re: The Bat Bike
Well guys, the "Bat bike" has now been transformed into the "Predator". Removed the front failing, fitted twin "dominator " headlights and a few carbon bits. The attempt at the Eagle on the tank is made from orange and silver striping tape. I just happened to notice tha...

Re: The Bat Bike
Gotham City (Perth) Western Australia. Taking all the air injection piping out is a job for someone with a lot of time on their hands. I thought about it, but am too busy (catching criminals). Also, I may have to put it back on again if it every needed to go over the pits (A requirement in Oz if the...

The Bat Bike
I was inspired to buy the Xtra Raptor (No 441 of 999) after watching the Dark Knight. Bought it new at a bargain price in 2008. I have ridden many Monsters, but never been impressed - too much vibration, lousy mirrors, poor reliability and excessive servicing costs. The SV1000 has a great engine but...
