About the "Not Secure" warning

Post by abssorb »

Hi, I'm the server admin for raptorchapter. :)

I just wanted to reassure users about the secure warning.

For decades the internet has worked with http: and https: addresses and it has always been the case that the http: was standard security, and https: was advanced security.

The risk hasn't changed. Advice has always been to never enter credit card or sensitive personal information on a site that doesn't have "s" or a padlock.

To protect users further, and because it's hard to spot the "s", from summer this year web browsers started giving dire warnings about standard security sites. I.e. those without "s".

The standard security on the server for this site is the same as it's ever been, and nothing about this site has weakened. All that's changed is the warning from the browser.

For now, if you trusted radptorchapter.org.uk in 2017, your risk is no worse if you continue to trust it in 2018, because nothing has changed. I.e. for this site you can ignore the warning added by the browser.

You can get a third party opinion easily across the internet. Here's one:

We did make some changes in July to add encryption certificates to the site, which would have stopped the warnings. But it seems they did not take. They are there, but there's something minor on the server which means that browsers are not detecting it. I will chase that up with the hosting provider via a support ticket. My apologies that this has slipped my attention.

Soon....

We will get SSL encryption certificate working in over the next 10 days. You will have to log in again as old cookies won't work any more, but there will be no other changes.

:)
