So how do you prop up the tank?

I'm going to be doing the valve clearances over christmas so spent today doing a dry run to forsee any disassembly issues I might bump into and to check on rear cylinder access.

Now I've got the complete tool kit but for the life of me couldn't figure out how any of the rods in there could be used to prop the tank up. There's no obvious holes or lugs in the tank or frame that I could see :?

Not that it really matters as I used the workshop favourite of a piece of wood to do the business but how do you suppose to prop up the tank?

the prop from the toolroll fits in the hole that you take the 2 bolts from at the front of the tank. Either one works fine!

Aha! So it only raises the tank by a farty amount then.... :(

In my ignorance I was expecting it to help with access to the rear cylinder head and therefore fit much farther back to raise the tank much nearer the vertical.

Think I'll stick with my precision machined bit of wood (ooeer missus)

I just take it completely off for rear cylinder access so it gives me plenty space to work. its only another bolt and a connector and quick release fuel line.

Simply loop a piece of string through the two front bolt holes, pull backwards and tie to the grabrail or your luggage rack, whichever you may have.

That's what I do anyway. Mine has no tool roll. It's been tail tidied, and the electrics under the seat rearranged and no room to carry tools.

NIce, I like your style - may be better than the bit of wood acting as a prop which, in all probability, would be accidently knocked away. Also allows unfettered access to the airbox etc.

Unfortunately I have neither grabrail or luggage rack - should be able to fix summat up with the frame tubes though.

Good to know there is still call for string & bits of wood with todays repairs.

Reg plate mount. Iirc it's the wrong angle down the frame when you pull the tank back

All sorted - bit of bent fencing wire round both the mounting bolts to create a handle. Fit them upside down in the tank holes with a couple of nuts to tighten them up. A nylon luggage strap, colour co-ordinated natch, round the wire and passing through one of seat frame rails and bingo! A mudguard mounting bracket on the rail prevents the strap from sliding down.
