Beginning of the Beginning!
Ladies and gentlemen
It is with regret that, as this forum is pretty much dead these days, I will be winding down the hosting. Raptorchapter.com will expire in mid January and I will not be renewing. This has less to do with my slide to the dark side and more to with the sites lack of use.
The current plan is that raptorchapter.org.uk will run on until March 2022, when it also expires, after which the forum will be closed. All the sites.. .com, .uk, and .co.uk .. lead to the raptorchapter.org.uk so, until mid March, if you currently come to the site via any of the others you should still be able to access the site by going directly to the .org.uk address, you may need to update shortcuts and or links.
There is a lot of info on here and if anyone would like to take the Raptor chapter on and forward please PM me .
We are currently hosted by a personal friend as a favour and this would not be able to continue if I don’t own the sites so you would need to arrange hosting and I would transfer all of the domain names over to you along with all the admin rights. I have no idea how to do the transfer but we can work it out!
It’s been a blast and I have met (actually and virtually) some great people but its had its day and for me it’s time to move on.

Re: Beginning of the end
Sorry to hear that, Sheebs, but it has been quiet here recently. I assumed it was mostly due the winter in the UK, when we all go into hibernation except those noble types who use their Raptors for commuting. And the jammy bods in the anti-podes, of course.
I've enjoyed being here and got plenty of information/advice. Fortunately, my two Rappies are in excellent health and I have no intention of giving anyone else the benefit of them! Asking prices are certainly going up, though they do hang around on ebay.
If the lights do go out here, thanks very much for looking after us, and I hope The Other Bike continues to satisfy!

Re: Beginning of the end
When Yahoo gave up on bikes, we changed the Ducati ST and Cagiva Alazzurra forums over to Groups.io very satisfactorily and quite easily. However, there was an intial charge of approx £200, after which the basic service suited to modest traffic was free. Members put their hands in their pockets and financed the moves, even the Alazzurra group which is small but keen. For my sins, I look after both the above.
I wonder if there would be any interest here for doing that?

Re: Beginning of the end
Having had a quick look at the Groups.io managers forum, it seems it was only easy when Yahoo groups were closing and G-io stepped in to support them. There is very little current information but migrating now from another server appears to be something that, if even possible, would require much more IT knowledge than I have.

Re: Beginning of the end
According to our landlord “ Some forums transferred to a session on reddit, which is an OK platform.” Not sure if that is any use to anyone?

Re: Beginning of the end
Presumably these don't get a lot of hits:
raptorchapter.com
raptorchapter.uk
And most traffic comes in to:
raptorchapter.co.uk
And I'm thinking that:
raptorchapter.org.uk
needs to be maintained for the various links in the posts / database to continue working?
Sheebs, is it possible to get an idea of the database size and bandwidth required to keep the forum running? Just looking at various hosting sites and the costs go up depending on these. The basic packages to host a phpBB site don't look prohibitive. I'd be interested in trying to keep it going for a bit at least!

Can you IM me the logon and password to the back end, to see what it involved in hosting it. You can change the password after we have had a looksee.

Now we're talking! I'm in for a bit of financial support if needed to keep the chapter going.

Re: Beginning of the end
The landlord is happy to help with the transfer to a new host if one is found and I have the domain names in my name with 123reg so should be able to transfer to a new owner.
Raptorchapter.co.uk expires 12 oct 23
.com 12 jan 22
.uk 11 oct 2022,
.org.uk 13 mar 22
Everything routes through to the .org.uk address by 123reg so you only really need that one but we started at .co.uk so some users may still be using that address.
The database is small, <20Mb. It's the image uploads that consume space, but we’re not using much. Currently RaptorChapter inc all media consumes 253Mb, which is peanuts.
I don't have access to the back end password, Mark (our Landlord) does all the technical stuff.
It’s lovely to see some interest in keeping it going thanks!
If anyone needs more info please ask

Re: Beginning of the end
Hi
Shebee, before we can commit i need to see the backend to make sure it will run on our hosting platform.
As i said if you want to give us access for a couple of days and then change the password i understand.
We just need to go through plugins, database types and compatibility, that sort of thing.
Many thanks
Keith

Re: Beginning of the end
sidrat, As an IT specialist you will be aware that the security implications of giving you access to the back end of the forum and so a gateway into a secure server are huge. It is on a shared server and so this is not going to be possible.
The forum runs a standard https://www.phpbb.com database. If you able to host this then we can send you the database files or whatever to install and I can transfer the domain names across to you
I am not being difficult, but obviously server security is key
Thanks
Sheb
