Help with rear wheel bearings

Post by JimBo »

Hello again everyone. Not been around for a while (not prison  ).

I shredded the brake side rear wheel bearing on Sunday! I thought it felt strange on the bends  . I'm having a go at replacing it, and the drive side of course, but have reached an impasse. I have successfully removed what was left of the inner race and balls enabling me to drift out the drive side. But on attempting to do the same on the outer race of the brake side I discovered it is recessed into the casting of the wheel, leaving nothing to knock it out with.

How do I remove it? Any help gladly received.

Also, should I replace the sprocket bearing at the same time, even though it appears to be fine?

Thanks in anticipation.

Job done. I simply replaced the remaining balls and inner race, packed it with a home made spring and knocked it out in the usual way.

If feels as good as new again, and my smiles come back. I realise now it was going for some time  . I know I should check myself, and will in future, but should this not have been picked up on the regular servicing at the dealer?

It certainly should have! sadly a lot of dealer servicing is a ripoff, someone
left a post recently about having a service at threecross and finding their cooling system only almost empty, all because the rsole who serviced
it did bother to follow the corect procedure when refilling the system, and this is at a main Cagiva dealer!!!

Hmmm.. talking to other motorcyclists this seems to be a problem with some dealers, regardless of marque :x !

I think, in future, I will do my own servicing, only using garages for jobs requiring specialist tools, and the MOT of course.
