Ok simple question from a simple person 
Do I just connect and go? Or as you suggest make final adjustments, what am I comparing? If I twiddle the knob (fnar fnar) can I cock it up ?

Jo,
fit it as per the instructions earlier in this thread then test it.
If all seems well and the 3k glitch dissappears when the black box is switched on then as long as your temps as read on your display are fine you have no need to adjust the black box.
If you have any probs then get in touch and I should be able to point you in the right direction.

Just fitted it this afternoon been away on bike etc so wanted to try it when i was back home. Had to ask hubby to do it as i couldnt bring myself to go near the wires incase i fecked it up lol.
I have ran it in the shed and can tell a diffference already and i get it now with the temp guage its like we have the control lol
I will be trying it out up the peaks tomorrow and now the temp has dropped it will be when I need it. So will report back tomorrow.

Haven't adjusted it, temp reading an average of around 97degrees when on a decent run and fan has kicked in at what I feel is the right time. So I assume I don't need to adjust anything?

sounds about right to me and similar to mine. At what temp reading did the fan kick in?

Seem to have 116 in my head but will check tomorrow when I do a 'normal' commute as I know where it kicks in on the run
