Re: Beginning of the end

Post by Trevor68 »

Hi,

I having been hosting various phpbb sites for many years now, and have plenty or room for a low-bandwidth hosting. Happy to do it for free, it's just a case of adding an "addon" domain for me and won't cost me anything. My shared hosting is based in Sydney with these folk and I have never had any trouble with it.

https://ventraip.com.au/

it would be a matter of setting up FTP access to grab the files, and a copy of the database, and then changing the nameservers to point to VentraIP.

So the hosting is simple (and free). The domain names is a bit more complex (and not free). Your correct you need to transfer them, I currently have a few registered with Cloudflare and https://www.name.com/

So you could likely transfer them to me, I have paypal if any folk here would like to contribute to that cost.

Truly sorry to hear that but allow me to thank everyone here for being so welcoming and resourceful especially for us living outside the UK.

I would be more than willing to pitch in with cost of hosting, if it's decided to continue this forum through another domain. Thank you once again, folks.

It is all good, the site is just moving downunder, but nothing here will change, all the addy's will remain the same. Your new overlord is a fairly laconic aussie who believes the best admins are never seen or heard from , so it will be business as usual here.

Big thanks to shebee for the champion effort over the last 20 years, I know my own Raptor would not be on the road right now without this place. 8)

That's brilliant news Trevor, thanks very much, and I echo the plaudits for Shebee. This has always been a nice friendly forum and much of the credit goes to her.

As regards admin, a benign guiding presence in the background is ideal, and that's what I try for with my two charges. However, some admin wallahs seem to tire of it and disappear as has just happened on the Ducati Hyperstrada forum, causing great frustration when stuff goes wrong. If you ever need assistance with the day-to-day running (but not the techy stuff!), I'd be happy to lend a hand. Also, do say if we can chip in for any expenses.

Keeping the Chapter going is an excellent early Xmas pressie! :D

shebee wrote: 2 years ago sidrat, As an IT specialist you will be aware that the security implications of giving you access to the back end of the forum and so a gateway into a secure server are huge. It is on a shared server and so this is not going to be possible.

The forum runs a standard https://www.phpbb.com database. If you able to host this then we can send you the database files or whatever to install and I can transfer the domain names across to you

I am not being difficult, but obviously server security is key

Thanks

Sheb

No Problem, i understand the security risk

Thanks to everyone who offered to help and take over. Hopefully soon you will have a new home and Trevor68 as your beloved leader (I hope he is good at herding cats!).

I have made Trevor an Admin user here and all the background stuff will (fingers crossed) happen in the next couple of weeks.

In the meantime Happy Christmas and I hope you all have a happy new year with lots of sunny miles!

Xx

Ohhhhhh I see now!

Well, Happy retirement to Shebee.
I knows where ya lives so you can't hide from me
All the core ancient ones are good mates in the real world(I hope) and I know where they all are. Apart from that Norrie guy. He lives past the lampost, over the hill and in that big middle of nowhere place where you get lost and can never get out. I've heard of this place but not yet ever been :gossip:

Good luck to the new leader. All hail the domain!

Oh my goodness, I really must login more often!

It would've been a shame to see this site close. I still have my Raptor although it needs a bit of TLC to get her back on the road. I will do it but, as they say, it's not lack of time it's lack of priority! I will tapping in here for technical info' when I do get round to it, so I would've been very disappointed not to be able to do so!

Thanks to those enabling this transfer to happen. If necessary I am happy to chip in to cover any costs incurred during the transfer. Just provide the details.

And thanks Shebee for all your hard work over umpteen years. Keep it rubber side down.

People are welcome to contribute if they wish. I have done some rough math and figure $100 AUD will be ample to renew the four domains and cover my hosting costs.
I was thinking about maybe just letting the other domains (.com, .co.uk & .uk) expire and just keep this one (.org.uk) but we can talk about that down the track, there is no rush as they are paid up for awhile.
Anyhow I added a paypal thingy to keep track, lets see how it goes. 8)

Sorry for the trouble in advance, mate, but for some reason I can't send my donations (something to do with country restrictions? I live in Indonesia). Can I send as personal friends/family instead? Cheers!

Gawd! I turn me back for a couple of weeks of Christmas and decorating and it's all being happening.

Trevor, Top Man  for doing the business and a suitable donation has been made.

Shebee, Top Woman  for doing the business all these years.

Old raptors & their forum never die... :ride: although they make get a little rusty with age.
