electrical glitch
electrical glitch
Hi, I need some advice please. My bike has developed an electrical glitch. Some times i can turn the ignition on hit the start button & she fires up no prob, but some times i turn the ignition on hit start & the dash lights go out & all is dead or the lights remain faint & the realys click & buzz or the dash display just flickers on & off. I have checked what i can, battery, fully charged, teminals, all ok, i have even changed the two black relays under the seat ( but not the yellow one). It feels like it could be a dodgy earth some where but i dont know where they are or what to check next. cheers.

Re: electrical glitch
I would check the battery further, if you have a multimeter, check battery volts standing is 12.5-13.0V and with engine running the charging voltage is 14.0- 14.8V. Run the bike at about 2000revs for the second check.

Re: electrical glitch
As CT said look at battery first can give strange symptoms especially under load

Re: electrical glitch
Mine did that last year...
It was the battery, as soon as i put the new one in it was perfect.
If i were you i'd go for the CTX 14 (i think it's CTX) or at least the 12.

Re: electrical glitch
now I come to think of it when my battery terminal lead came loose it did a similar thing so could be way to go. I still had to wait for AA as didn't fancy trying to bump start a twin but at least battery was ok after a charge - make sure it is holding charge and that its charging at 14V ish, if it is then think about plan B

Re: electrical glitch
My battery failed this summer with exactly the same symptoms.
There is an earth on the frame on the nearside just under the fuel tank but unless its been disturbed it should be ok.
The clicking relays is a deffo sign of low voltage ( knackered battery) as for bump starting forget it. The best way if your stuck is a jump start.

Re: electrical glitch
thanks to every one, looks like the battery has given up the ghost, so now need to get a new one sorted while there are hopefully still a few sunny days left. cheers.
